Summer Fun Waterpark: a slice of summer

Summer Fun Waterpark at 1410 Waco Road in Belton is one of Texas's original waterparks and still one of its most beloved. The seven-plus-acre park centers on a 40-foot tower with three giant waterslides, about 900 feet of drops and twists total, plus a lazy river, a main pool, a kiddie pool, and cabanas for rent.

The park runs weekends in May and then daily from Memorial Day weekend through the summer, roughly 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., and one of its best features is the cooler policy: families can bring their own food and drinks, with a small cooler fee, which makes the day far more affordable than theme-park lunches.

The lake parks: Westcliff and Cedar Ridge

For a lake day without a boat, the Corps parks deliver. Westcliff Park on the southwestern shore of Belton Lake has a designated swimming beach, a year-round two-lane boat ramp, a playground, covered picnic tables, and a campground with RV sites, making it a favorite for families who want water plus shade plus facilities.

Cedar Ridge Park on the north side is the bigger all-rounder: 76 camp sites with water and electric, screened shelters, showers, a two-lane ramp, a fishing dock, a swim beach, a playground, and basketball. Bring the fishing poles and the floaties and you will not hear a single complaint until sundown.

Both are Corps parks with day-use areas, so pack the cooler, claim a table, and make the lake your living room for the day.

Movies in the park and summer nights

Through the warm months, Belton parks and the downtown area host family movie nights under the stars, the kind of free community programming that small towns are quietly great at. Christmas on the Chisholm Trail

The festival year closes with the town's most charmed weekend: Christmas on the Chisholm Trail, held the first weekend of December in historic downtown Belton. Friday night brings live music, food trucks, a holiday movie, and the City of Belton tree lighting; Saturday layers on holiday shopping, vendors, music, a Kid Zone, Santa, a synthetic ice-skating rink, and the Christmas parade down the square at 6 p.m.
