BLORA: The Outdoor Recreation Area That Makes Belton a Family Playground

What exactly is BLORA?

BLORA stands for Belton Lake Outdoor Recreation Area, and it is the U.S. Army's recreation operation on the Fort Cavazos side of Belton Lake. In practice that means roughly two thousand acres of lakefront and woodland along Cottage Road, run by the post's Morale, Welfare, and Recreation program, with everything from a swimming beach to a rodeo-style ranch operation.

Gate access is the first thing people ask about, and the answer is simple: the area is open to the public. Authorized Department of Defense patrons, active-duty families, retirees, and Veterans pay the lower gate rate, around $5 a vehicle, while other civilians pay about $10 a vehicle. You bring the whole family in one car and it is one of the cheapest days out in Bell County.

Sierra Beach: summer belongs to the sand

Sierra Beach IS BLORA's lake swimming beach, the kind of warm-water, sandy-shore spot kids remember for decades. After a three-year closure for repairs, the beach reopened in 2023 and immediately reclaimed its spot as the go-to lake beach in the area. In summer it typically runs Friday through Sunday from noon to 8 p.m., and the fort kicks off the season with a free Beach Blast event.

The beach is unstaffed, so swim at your own risk, keep life jackets on the little ones, and heed the flags. Snacks, water, and chairs in the cooler, sunscreen on everyone: that is the whole packing list. The water is shallow near shore, which makes it ideal for teaching kids to swim, and the shade trees behind the sand give parents a place to breathe.

Paintball and the challenge course

For the older kids and the kids at heart, BLORA keeps a paintball course open on the property, with fields designed for walk-on groups and birthday parties. It is a controlled, marshaled operation, so it is the safe way to let a dozen teenagers chase each other through the woods with paint guns on a Saturday afternoon.

There is also a Challenge Course, a low- and high-elements team-building setup that scout troops, school groups, and church youth groups book through the recreation office. If you have a group event coming up, ask about it when you call.

BLORA Ranch: horses above the lake

Just up the road, BLORA Ranch runs the horse side of the operation, and it is a genuine gem. Guided trail rides wind through the post's woodlands on western saddles, with rides typically available Wednesday through Sunday, and the ranch also gives Western and English riding lessons, plus pony rides for the littlest ones. Reservations are required, so call ahead through the ranch office at (254) 394-5018.

You do not need experience. The wranglers match horses to riders, the trails are gentle, and there is something about being on a horse on a Fort Cavazos ridgeline above Belton Lake that makes the whole day feel like a scene from an old movie.

Camping, boats, and 26 miles of trail

Campers have three areas to choose from: Deer Park, Cedar, and Cottage RV Park, with RV sites, primitive tent camping, and rental cottages, plus pavilions for group cookouts. Boat ramps serve the trailer crowd, shoreline fishing is open with a Texas license, and the property's mountain-bike trail network stretches roughly 26 miles across the post, enough for a serious day on two wheels.

Kayaking, picnicking, playgrounds, sports-field rental, and a rental program for gear round out the menu. You could legitimately visit BLORA six weekends in a row and do something different every time.

Make it a BLORA Saturday

Here is the family-tested recipe: arrive at the gate before 10 a.m., claim a spot near the beach, swim until lunch, grill or picnic under the trees, let the kids wear themselves out on the playground, and close the day with a shoreline walk or a canoe paddle. Add a ranch trail ride on a second trip and you have a summer.

BLORA sits about 25 to 30 minutes from Ranch at Latitude 31 through Belton, an easy drive that becomes a habit once you discover the beach. Combine it with the trails at Miller Springs and the quiet coves at Stillhouse and you have three distinctly different lake days within half an hour of the community.
